Process control for the graphic arts
Process control is of increasing importance in the prediction and maintenance of colour, particularly as industry workflows become more and more fragmented. The way in which colour quality is maintained is increasingly dependent upon the objective measurement of the various stages of the process in order to ensure predictable results.
However, the measurement procedures which are needed to achieve control in proofing and printing are increasingly dependent on colorimetry. The industry is in a state of transition from the traditional densitometric control procedures to those requiring greater use of colorimetry. It is imperative that those responsible for process control within the printing and publishing industries are aware of the reasons for this change, and can decide what are the appropriate measurements to be used for any application they are responsible for.
The basic principles of densitometry and colorimetry will be briefly reviewed and the two measurement procedures will be critically compared. The measurements needed to achieve control at all stages of the colour reproduction process will be defined and what is required to ensure the significance of the results obtained.
What you will learn
Participants will learn about the range of variables that can affect the accuracy and consistency of colour reproduction and what procedures may be implemented to control them. With regard to proofing and printing they will learn about the appropriateness of densitometry and colorimetry for process control, and what measurements and derivative parameters are necessary to ensure consistent results in halftone and continuous tone processes.
The practical sessions will employ both colorimetry and densitometry to undertake a range of process control measurements so that delegates can discover the appropriate procedures for specific applications. They will also learn how to assess the significance of any data obtained and how the uncertainty of measurement may be built into the tolerances for the control process.
Who should attend
The course objective is to provide a detailed understanding of process control in printing and publishing and is aimed at all those who are responsible for implementing control procedures within the graphic arts. Thus it is appropriate for all those with any direct responsibility for quality control and production, or as advisors to these industry sectors whether in a sales support or consultancy role.
This course immediately follows a two-day course on colour measurement. This is a recommended preliminary for any participants who do not already have a working knowledge of colorimetry and densitometry.
